Color Theory, without Color
Everything that matters about color — contrast, harmony, relationship — is visible in black and white first. Hue is just the last thing we add to enhance how an element or a page looks with relation to other colors.

Value comes first
Value is how light or dark a color is, independent of its hue. It's the only property that survives when you strip color away entirely — which is why a black-and-white photograph still reads perfectly.
It's also the property most responsible for legibility, depth, and hierarchy in a design. Use the slider to change the value of the square.
Both squares are the exact same gray. Simultaneous contrast makes identical values look different depending on what surrounds them — the same trick a designer uses when picking a hue against a busy background.

Hue, Saturation, Lightness
Hue is the angle on the color wheel — what we normally just call "the color." Saturation is its intensity, from gray to pure. Lightness is where it sits between black and white.
This is the one place in the lesson where color is allowed in — because you're the one turning it on.

Relationships on the wheel
Color harmony is just geometry — fixed angles between hues on the same wheel. Drag the marker to set a base hue, then compare how each relationship pulls its partners from around the circle.

Contrast, checked
Harmony makes colors agree. Accessibility asks something stricter: can the text actually be read? This is the WCAG contrast ratio — the same value logic from section one, made rigorous.
This is particularly important for individuals with vision impairments. Many countries have laws that require websites and apps to use high-contrast colors, ensuring text stays readable for people with visual impairments.
